Lululemon Unveils New Store At i12 Katong

Lululemon is delighted to announce the opening of its new i12 Katong store, the brand’s sixth location in the city, deepening the brand’s commitment to Singapore - as a brand that truly understands the need of the community and accelerate positive change to support its well-being.  The new store embraces the bustling neighbourhood of Katong and connects with Guests through its diverse range of products designed to enhance well-being and performance.

Located at the heart of Katong, the over 3,000 square feet shop connects the district and the vibrant lifestyle hub of Singapore, bringing lululemon closer to the local community. Materials such as timber, terrazzo and white painted finish have been applied throughout the space to retain the natural mood that connects with our brand.  Inspired by the unique history of Katong, light art was created and will be installed in the shop to celebrate the richness of local culture and heritage.

To celebrate the new store opening, we partnered with local artist Xin Li to create some special artwork.  Xin Li is an architecture graduate from the National University of Singapore, and sees illustration as a medium to explore the urban and cultural heritage of Singapore. His art is well known for juxtaposing layers of culture, history, architecture, and nature with references to pop culture or nostalgic childhood memories.

Can you share more about your inspiration and creation process for this artwork?
I spent a small part of my childhood living near the studio of Ng Eng Tengat Everitt Road area and have fond childhood memories...I remember getting my favorite sweets from the mamak shop near the house and having wanton noodles at Feifei.

I find the neighbourhood has a nice laid-back atmosphere and wanted to recreate that feeling by including elements of East Coast Park and the sea to invoke a sense of respite from work and buzz.  I also wanted to create that contrast you can visually see in the architecture you can find around here: on one hand you have the contemporary cafes, while the other you have the iconic colourful shophouses along Koon Seng Road.

I juxtaposed these elements within the illustrations for the map and the stickers where I imagine characters engaging in modern lifestyles in lululemon’s athleisure wear with the beautiful heritage architecture you can find in Katong–Joo Chiat area.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

What is your favourite way to work out?
I used to cycle to studio to work out.  However, since the Circuit Breaker, I have been doing cycling as a form of exercise and to explore the different neighbourhoods in Singapore.  Katong –Joo Chiat are part of my usual routes when I head to the east.  Cycling is my favourite way to get some work out: It brings me somewhere both physically and mentally, which is very helpful when work gets rather intense with many deadlines.

Do you have any favorite pieces or workout staples from lululemon?
Since I enjoy heading out to explore and use cycling as a way to commute in Singapore, I place a lot of importance on durability and functionality of my pants.  The Commission Pants strike the perfect balance between being comfortable and durable, yet stylish enough to attend a casual outing.
